 Hong Kong puts the clamps down |
The Hong Kong area's primary registrar, HKDNR,
has joined forces with the Hong Kong Police
Department in a major crackdown on spam sites. Up
until last month, there were
thousands
of .hk
sites being registered by the major spam gangs,
and they were one of the most common locations
for the likes of the illegal Canadian
Pharmacy operation.
It looked like there was nothing anyone
could do about it. Many an Internet user, sick
of the deluge of spam from the likes of Polyakov,
Kuvayev and Chan and their affiliates, had been
lodging complaints with HKDNR to no avail. Then
some new legislation was quietly enacted in Hong
Kong, Within the space of two weeks, everything
changed. Complaints were answered, and
complainants were told that the problems they
raised were being addressed.
Now I can safely report that hundreds
of .hk spam sites are being removed every day.
Look them up and you find they are all missing
their "A" record - meaning that they are dead,
dead, dead.
HKDNR and the Hong Kong Police Department
are to be congratulated for their prompt actions,
and their continuing campaign to rid Hong Kong of
the vermin that were infesting it.
Now, let's see if their cousins in the
Beijing area can learn something from this, and
restore the PRC's reputation, which is currently
at an all time low. Beijing will not be respected
until it shows that it, too, is no safe haven for
cyber-criminals.

| 1,000 IsRaz infected machines |
This week I started getting some short spams -
one liners, with a URL to visit. It turns out
each URL is a web site with a payload - a
massmailing worm infection. Just clicking on the
link out of curiosity is enough to start an
immediate download of the infection to most
machines.
So I did a bit of digging, with
the assistance of a team of associates. Here is
what we found.
The worm is known under
various names, such as W32/Israz worm, Israz,
WORM_ISRAZ.A, 32/Akosw.A@mm.
The spam
messages contain as little as

where example.com is the corrupt site name.
I will not list actual site names here,
for obvious reasons. My next step was to pull the
headers from these worm distribution web sites,
to see what sort of "server" was running.
I discovered that they were running a
minimum server, via an infection, called
nginx/0.5.17 ("engine x"). It is a high-
performance HTTP
server and reverse proxy, as well as an
IMAP/POP3/SMTP proxy server. In short, it can run
as a hidden web server, and as an emailer for
spam. Nginx (Engine-X) was written by
Igor Sysoev for Rambler.ru, Russia's second-most
visited website.
Next I looked at the IP
addresses where these spammed web sites had been
running over the past week. To my horror, I
detected over 1,000 such addresses. I know that
that is only a fraction of the actual spread.

The criminal gang that sought to exploit a major
registrar has been given its marching orders.
Domains that were registered for use as domain name
servers, the gateway to illegal fake pharmacy and
fake watch sites, are now out of action.

There have been a succession of US registrars who
have had to learn the lesson about doing business
with criminals. The latest in the long line is
Network Solutions. A long established registrar,
you would think that they would know the ropes by
now. Like how to shut down a name server domain
successfully. Many people have complained to
Network Solutions about the domains they registered
for arch-criminal Alex Polyakov. These complainants
have swapped notes about their experiences. Network
Solutions have consistently taken the complaint on
board, and avowed that they have removed the
domains. But to date, they are still resolving.
